PATRICK COARD’S GAMBIT

A sellout exhibit is what every artist dreams of, and that is exactly what happened during Patrick Coard’s recent show that showcased his bronze-patina brass artworks. Having recently moved from Paris with his lovely wife, Kifu Augousti, the Irish/Scandinavian designer has always been drawn to different creative fields, from an architect in Europe to redefining the creative space at the Copenhagen School of Design.

His creativity has now morphed to sculptures and lighting objects. As he explains, “My current collection is a result of feeling truly at home in Manila and with my life right now. Becoming a father and seeing the world through my daughter (River Luna)’s eyes where everything is so pure, her curiosity so magical, gave me incredible adrenalin with my work. I wanted to explore new, ambitious scales, different ethereal qualities, constantly pushing the boundaries.”

Well-heeled guests flocked towards W/17 on Pasong Tamo, the home and lifestyle store, with charming Kaye Tinga welcoming them throughout the evening. Taking a breather, she enthused, “It had been a while since we hosted an event at W/17, and we knew that for our first show after the pandemic, it had to be something true to the essence of our brand while also being new and exciting. We found that in Patrick Coard. He has great understanding of materials; his pieces are very bold in their forms and still true to the element they are carved from. The sculptures are very inviting—a sense of contemplation, with refined craftsmanship and attention to detail in each piece.”

Good news from the grapevine: W/17 is currently accepting back orders on a very limited basis since there is still a huge interest in the Coard pieces.
